#InspireInclusion

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a day dedicated to recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. IWD serves as a powerful call to action, urging individuals and communities to work towards achieving gender equality. This year’s theme — #InspireInclusion — reflects on the critical role of inclusion in building a more equitable world for all.

A Brief History of IWD

The history of IWD stretches back to 1908, when over 15,000 women across the United States marched demanding suffrage and better working conditions. Over the decades, the movement gained momentum, evolving into a global phenomenon that transcends borders and cultures. Today, IWD is recognized by the United Nations and celebrated in over 100 countries, showcasing the collective power of women’s voices.

An Ongoing Challenge

Achieving true gender equality remains an ongoing challenge. Women still face various forms of discrimination and bias, limiting their opportunities and hindering their full potential. #InspireInclusion acknowledges that to achieve true equality, it will require more than only recognizing women’s achievements. We all must dismantle barriers and create inclusive spaces where women can thrive.

The idea of inclusion is about creating an environment where all voices are equally heard and valued. We must strive to dismantle unconscious biases and discriminatory practices that perpetuate gender inequalities and ensure equal access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and political participation. #InspireInclusion

We can do this through several key actions:

  • Educate ourselves and others. Once you understand the systemic nature of gender inequality, it’s easier to dismantle it. If we can educate ourselves and others about the challenges women face, we will foster empathy and understanding, paving the way for change.
  • Challenge stereotypes and biases. We must challenge the harmful stereotypes and unconscious biases that limit women’s opportunities. This means calling out sexist behavior and microaggressions, both in our personal lives and in professional settings.
  • Advocate for policies that promote equality. It’s vital to support policies that promote gender equality, such as equal pay legislation, affordable childcare, and access to reproductive healthcare.
  • Celebrate women’s achievements. Inspire others by recognizing and celebrating the achievements of women across various fields. These celebratory moments will go a long way in challenging traditional perceptions of women’s roles in society.
  • Amplify women’s voices. Listen to women’s perspectives, create platforms for them to share their experiences, and amplify their voices in decision-making processes.

Some of these key actions may seem like a no-brainer, but we shouldn’t take them for granted. By utilizing these corrective actions, we will help build a more inclusive world. Let us use this International Women’s Day as a catalyst for action. Commit to #InspireInclusion and work towards a future where equality is not just a dream, but a reality.
